Punch is a great drink to make if you are having a party and it does not have to be alcoholic although, of course, there are variations with alcohol. Most of these recipes are fruity and contain some kind of carbonated beverage as well as sugar and perhaps fruit pieces. Lemon, orange, and lime slices are nice in this drink, as are maraschino cherries or slices of banana.
This drink was introduced to England from India in the early 1600s and then its popularity spread to other countries. Punch is a firm favorite at parties and it is served from a wide bowl. The word "punch" comes from the Hindi word "panch" and the drink was originally made with sugar, lemon, alcohol, tea or spices, and water. In the early seventeenth century, most of the recipes were made with brandy or wine, but in 1655, Jamaican rum was introduced and it was used in these recipes.

Punch in Korea is made with cinnamon, ginger, and persimmons. In the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean countries, it is served as an aperitif. The Mexican version is made with mescal, fermented sugar cane, or tequila and it is mixed with "aguas frescas." Because of the sweetness, this Mexican recipe does not taste alcoholic.
In Germany, the drink is a combination of fruit juices, spices and perhaps also liquor or wine. A flaming rum with sugar cubes make up "feuerzangenbowle" - a German drink that is popular at Christmas.

Cherry Punch
Thaw six ounces of frozen lemonade concentrate and six ounces of limeade concentrate. Combine them with an undrained twenty ounce can of pineapple chunks in the blender until smooth. Pour this mixture into a gallon container and stir in two cups of water. Add two liters of cherry soda and two liters of ginger ale and garnish with lemon and lime slices. This recipe makes about six quarts.
Ginger and Grape Punch
Combine a liter of ginger ale with a liter of carbonated water and twenty four ounces of white grape juice. Serve with ice. It is best to use chilled drinks to make this punch, else the ice melts too fast. This makes enough to serve twenty people.
Strawberry and Ginger Cooler
Stir a cup of white sugar into two cups of boiling water until it dissolves. Steep two teabags in two cups of hot water for five minutes, then throw the teabag away. Add the tea to the sugar mixture. Add thirty two ounces of ginger ale, two and a half cups of orange juice, four cups of pineapple juice, and two cups of lemon juice.
Stir in one and a quarter pounds of chopped fresh strawberries and chill. This recipe makes ten servings. If you want it to be a bright red color, just add a teaspoon of red food coloring.
A Spooky Halloween Drink
Bring two cups of water to a boil, and then stir in a package of cherry jello until it dissolves. Cover and chill overnight. To serve, pour a cup of ginger ale into a glass and add a spoonful of jello. The jello will float. This recipe makes enough to serve six.
