High Calorie Food Substitutes - Key Details You Need to be Aware of

They say that success in dieting hinges largely on knowing how to substitute high-calorie foods for healthier options. When faced with severe stress, most of us turn to comfort foods like ice cream, chocolates, cookies and pastries to make us feel good. When faced with a looming deadline that seems impossible to beat or after a recent breakup, our normal reaction is to raid the refrigerator and eat away. Of course, after we have actually handed in our work and the boss congratulates us for a job well done or long after our boyfriend or girlfriend (yes, boys do pig out too after a break up) has become nothing more than a bad nightmare in our lives, the effects of our unhealthy comfort food choices remain etched in our bodies-- bulging love handles and flabby thighs that we can't see to get rid off.

Low Calorie Desserts - 4 Simple Ways to Create Desserts That Will Lighten Up Your Weight Loss Diet

Do you want to lose weight and still enjoy food? You can. Do you miss these nice desserts you used to have? The fact that you are on a diet does not mean you can't have them any more.

Did you know that having a dessert or sweet treat every once in a while actually increases your chances to lose weight successfully? Why? Because if you allow yourself this bit of luxury you can't do without, you are much less likely to cheat on your diet and then exaggerate it. After all, if you can eat what you want, there's no need for cheating.

Desserts Food

The secret of enjoying desserts when you want to lose weight is to choose low calorie desserts. And fortunately, with some simple tricks you can create low calorie desserts that don't really taste like boring low calorie food.

There are four ways of reducing calories in your dessert:
reducing the amount of fat reducing the amount of sugar reducing the amount of other simple carbohydrates reducing portion sizes
Reducing fat
Most fat in your desserts comes in form of butter or dairy products like cream, milk, cream cheese and mascarpone. You can reduce fat very easily without losing much taste.
Replace butter with a good margarine. That's not only less fat but also healthier fat. In many cake or muffin recipes you could even use canola oil instead. If cream is not used beaten, you can use butter milk or coconut milk instead. They contain much less fat and also taste great. Use low fat milk instead of full cream milk. It works just as well and you will barely notice the difference. Plus, you cut calories coming from milk to about one third. Buttermilk can replace milk in shakes and smoothies. Use low fat smooth cottage cheese or ricotta in place of cream cheese or mascarpone. Your dessert will have significantly less calories and also be less heavy. Buy low fat ice cream. Try to find one that is not too high in sugar. Alternately, you can make your own ice cream with low fat milk and artificial sweeteners.
Reducing sugar
This is a bit more tricky but still possible. In many recipes you can simply reduce the amount of sugar. If you then feel it's not sweet enough, you have several options:
You can use artificial sweeteners like Splenda or Aspartame. They are very sweet (so a little will do) but contain almost no calories. You can also use natural sweeteners like honey, fructose or maple syrup. They contain fewer calories than sugar, and since they are much sweeter you need less. But remember that they still do contain calories. Natural sweeteners are a great option if you just want to sweeten something a little. But if you want to use a large amount, then rather don't go this route. Add naturally sweet foods like fresh or dried fruit to your dessert. This will reduce your need for additional sugar and at the same time provide you with many important vitamins and fiber.
Reducing other simple carbohydrates
Of all carbohydrates, sugar is the one that causes most damage. But there are other simple carbohydrates that have a quite similar effect on our body. Refined products like white flour also contain simple carbohydrates. These are stored as fat when you eat too many of them, so you should reduce these foods as well when you want to lose weight.

The best way to do this is to swap white flour with whole grain flour. You can completely replace it or mix the two, depending on how much you need or want to reduce calories. The good thing about a whole grain muffin is that it also fills you quicker and better than one made of white flour. So you will eat less.

Reducing portion sizes
One of the best and most effective ways of reducing calories is certainly simply eating less. I'm not saying you should have tiny portions. Just reasonable ones. You don't really need five scoops of ice-cream, two would also do. Rather stick to smaller portions and enjoy them without having to worry too much about the calories.

Weight Loss Recipes - 2 Low Calorie Desserts That Even Non-Dieters Will Enjoy

When we go on a diet, we think we will be strong, and for a while we really manage to resist all these temptations of sweet foods and desserts. But sooner or later, we miss them too much, and that's when we start cheating on our diet.

Many have fallen into this trap of thinking that any fat and sugar must be completely banned in order to lose weight, and not realizing that not a restrictive but rather an overall healthy and balanced diet is the key to successful weight loss and weight maintenance. And in a balanced diet, sweetness and desserts too have their cherished place.

Desserts Food

Here are two low calorie dessert recipes that you won't need to feel bad about. Both recipes make six servings.

Chocolate Cream With Strawberries

Ingredients:

2 tbsp. pure cocoa 1 tsp. gelatine 300g soft tofu 1 tsp. vanilla essence   2 egg whites 1 tbsp. castor sugar 150 g strawberries (quartered), + 12 whole strawberries extra mint leaves for decoration

Steps:

Dissolve the gelatine according to the instructions on the packet (for adding it to cold liquid).   Dissolve the cocoa in 60 ml hot water. Drain the tofu, mix it in your blender with the cocoa mixture and the vanilla essence until smooth. Fill the cream into a bowl, add the gelatine and mix well. Beat egg whites in a separate bowl until it starts getting firm. Add the sugar and beat well until firm and glossy. Carefully mix under the chocolate cream with a metal spoon. Fill the quartered strawberries in six 250-ml dessert bowls and cover with the chocolate cream. Put into the fridge for a couple of hours until it is firm. Decorate with the whole strawberries and mint leaves and serve.
Poached Apples In Grape And Mango Syrup

Ingredients:

6 firm apples 1/2 l white grape juice 1/2 l mango juice   4 cloves 500 g white grapes 250 g low-fat yoghurt (plain or vanilla flavor) 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tbsp. honey

Steps:

Put grape and mango juice with the cloves in a pot that is large enough for the apples. Peel the apples but leave the stems on, then put them in the pot with the juices. Bring to boil, then cover with a lid and allow simmering on low heat for 35-40 minutes until the apples are soft. Remove the pot from the stove and let apples and syrup cool down. Carefully move apples and syrup into a large bowl, cover with cling wrap and put in the fridge over night. Bring the syrup to boil, then reduce the heat and have it simmering for 40 minutes. It should reduce to about one third of the liquid. Let it cool down slightly. In the meantime, mix yoghurt, cinnamon and honey in a bowl. Place the apples each on a small plate, pour the syrup over them and arrange some grapes on the plate. Spoon the yoghurt mixture over the apples and serve immediately.

Remember that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a tempting dessert every now and then. It won't blow up your weight loss diet. All that matters is that you keep these desserts for occasional treats, and that you make an honest attempt to keep them as healthy as possible, using low fat products, reducing sugar or using sugar alternatives, and whenever possible include fruit.

Low Calorie and Vegetarian Recipes For Dessert

Whether you're having a party or you just want something sweet read after dinner there are good vegetarian recipes for low calorie desserts available.

How you create your low calorie desserts is completely up to your preferences. Many dessert recipes can be made low calorie by reducing the amount of sugar.

This can be done a couple of different ways; you can either, reduce the amount of sugar slightly and include a sweet fruit or juice in its place, or you can also substitute Splenda in place of sugar. Another way is to just reduce sugar and not put anything in its place.

Mixed Berry Sorbet

½ cup sugar
½ cup Splenda
1 1/2 tsp cornstarch
2 cups water
1 cup pureed strawberries
½ cup pureed blackberries
½ cup pureed raspberries
In a large saucepan, dissolve sugar and cornstarch in water over low heat. Boil mixture until it becomes thick, like syrup (about 10 minutes).
Remove from the heat and cool.

When the sugar syrup is completely cooled mix together with the pureed fruit.

Place in a plastic container (without a lid) and freeze until it is solid.

Cut the sorbet into chunks and process in a blender or food processor until smooth.

Put the sorbet back into the freezer and freeze for another 4 hours.

Serve frozen.

Variations:

Strawberry sorbet = use 2 cups pureed strawberries and omit the other berries.

Blackberry sorbet = use 2 cups pureed blackberries and omit other berries.

Raspberry sorbet = use 2 cups pureed raspberries and omit other berries.

Mixed fruit sorbet (or any other fruit sorbet) you can change the flavor of sorbet by using a different fruit, or combination of fruits, as long as you keep the portion of fruit puree the same.

Sugar-free Carrot Cake

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/4 cups water
1 cup dates, chopped
1 cup raisins
1 tsp cinnamon
¾ tsp ground ginger
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp ground nutmeg
¾ cup carrot, grated
½ cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
Lightly grease cake pan and set aside.

In a small bowl mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this mixture aside.

Combine the water, dates, raisins, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and gently simmer for 5 minutes.

Add shredded carrots to the hot water mixture and cool.

Once cooled add walnuts and orange juice to the carrot mixture and mix well.
