Recipe for Depression Christmas Bread Pudding Dessert

What You Need
3 slices of fresh bread
2 eggs
½ cup sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
1 2/3 cups evaporated milk
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon nutmeg

How to Make It

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Begin by breaking the bread into small pieces and then place them in the bottom of a 1 quart oven safe dish and then set aside until needed.

Using a medium size mixing bowl and an electric mixer beat the eggs and then stir in the sugar and salt. Mix well and then gradually stir in the evaporated milk. Keep beating, while gradually adding the boiling water and then mix in the vanilla. Beat well until thoroughly mixed.

Pour this batter over the bread pieces evenly and then sprinkle nutmeg on top. Place dish in preheated oven to bake for about 60 minutes or until you can insert a knife and have it come out clean.

You can serve this humble dish that was popular when times were hard just as it is, or you may want to add whipped topping or even vanilla ice cream before serving.
