Making The Best Desserts With Bananas

Although bananas are wonderfully delicious eaten fresh from the peel, they are also perfect for using in so many different types of dessert recipes mixed with a variety of foods. Use bananas for making breads, cakes, muffins, pies, and puddings, just to name a few of the desserts and snacks you will be sure to make again and again.

Bananas are a tropical fruit that come in a few different varieties with the traditional, yellow Cavendish type being the most common for eating plain and using in baking or for desserts.

Some other types of bananas include the burro, which is shorter than the Cavendish and features a creamy colored flesh, the blue java, which is a small, plump type perfect for desserts thanks to its extra sweet fruit, and the baby banana, a tiny version of the Cavendish measuring no more than three inches long.

You can buy bananas at all stages of ripeness depending on your personal preferences and what you plan on using them for. Bananas that are all green are unripe and not ready to eat or use for cooking while those that are mostly yellow with some green coloring on the tips are just right.

Brown or black specks will appear on the peel as the fruit ripens and softens inside. If you have bananas that are too ripe to eat as is, mash them, and use them to cook with. To keep mashed bananas from turning brown, add a few drops of lemon juice.

Store your bananas at room temperature unless you want to stop the ripening process, in which case you should keep them in the refrigerator. You can also keep ripe bananas in the refrigerator to extend their shelf life by a few days. Do not worry if the peel turns brown, as the cold will not affect the fruit inside.

Add a smooth texture to your fruit salads using sliced bananas or mix them with custards, ice cream, puddings, and yogurt. You can also dry bananas to increase their sweetness and eat them as a snack. Bananas can even be baked, boiled, sauteed, and steamed for making an interesting array of sweet treats.

Melt Mexican chocolate and use it to coat whole bananas put on waxed paper and placed in the freezer. You can sprinkle your favorite type of chopped nuts on top of the bananas or enjoy them plain.

What You Need

4 tablespoons margarine 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup orange juice 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 4 slightly green bananas, peeled, sliced

How to Make It

In a skillet, melt the margarine with the brown sugar over low to medium heat. Stir in the orange juice and the cinnamon and cook until the brown sugar dissolves.

Add in the banana slices and stir to coat well. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until the liquid is just about caramelized and the bananas are turning a golden brown color.

Serve the Mexican fried bananas while hot.
